Stephen Springer

Following a road traffic accident in 1991 I became a tetraplegic (spinal cord injury level c5/6). I soon became aware of the challenges and difficulties of living with a disability, not only the strictures of the built environment and social attitudes but also the issues around finding and managing care, and navigating employment opportunities. And while there have been improvements over the past three decades there is still a great deal to be done to ensure that disabled people can live their lives and not just exist.

From 1997 to 2018 I worked for John Grooms and Livability in a variety of roles. I also held trustee roles with the Spinal Injuries Association Radar/Disability Rights and the Milton Keynes Centre for Independent Living and as a consequence participated in a variety of specialist technical committees, delivering presentations and writing papers. Through these experiences I have formulated thoughts about how to empower individuals to take control of their lives and I want to promote greater personalisation of services received by individuals and to enable them to exercise control over their lives and I think I can contribute positively to these issues.
